"Freiheit und Kontrolle." Freedom and control. Two seemingly contrasting concepts that are as essential to effective polyamory as love and respect. For those unacquainted with my blog, mein Name ist Klaus, and I'm a polyamorous German, aged half a century. Here I share my musings and experiences with this beautiful yet complex way of life. When I first ventured into polyamory, it was for the feeling of Freiheit; the freedom to love and be loved by multiple people without the societal constraints of monogamy. But like everything else in life, absolute freedom is not entirely possible, nor is it healthy. One needs to maintain a balance, a structured chaos, if you please. What I quickly discovered in this journey, however, is that a high degree of Kontrolle, control, isn't just necessary, it's paramount. It isn’t so much about restraining the affections and attractions simmering within oneself, but more to do with understanding one’s emotional spectrum and establishing boundaries. In a polyamorous relationship, you don't just share your life with one person, but several. And like a symphony, every instrument has its part to play, and every note must be in perfect harmony for a beautiful melody to emerge. I recall a distinct period in my life. I was navigating a difficult course, juggling between my love for Elsa, a free-spirited artist, and my steady relationship with my partner, Helga. At that moment, my love for them both was akin to a wild river bursting its banks. I was torn between my desire for the sweeping passion that Elsa and I encapsulated and the steady, grounding love that Helga and I shared. I felt as if I was spiraling out of control, and this apparent lack of control scared me. Both relationships started to fracture under the weight of my uncertainty and lack of control. In a moment of desperation, I turned to self-reflection. I imagined myself as the conductor of my symphony, and I realised that my instruments were playing off-tune. I had to take back control, and in doing so, I learned that control in a polyamorous relationship doesn’t mean stifling the emotions or suppressing the desires. Instead, it means creating boundaries that respect all relationships and manage those potent feelings without suppressing them. I learned to divide my time and attention adequately, giving each relationship its due respect and nurturing. Elsa and Helga were understanding and supportive during this course correction. They too had felt the strain, but their love for me, and my respect for them, transcended the chaotic disco we were dancing. We all took conscious steps towards a more harmonious symphony. Polyamory is like a beautifully choreographed dance between Freiheit und Kontrolle. The dance is not always smooth. There are stumbles, and there are clumsy missteps, but when done right, it is a breathtaking spectacle. It is a dance that requires constant effort and conscious inputs from all parties involved. Above all, polyamory has taught me that love is not confined within societal norms, it flourishes in the freedom of expression. But to let love bloom in its full glory, one needs to balance it with a fine touch of control. In the end, polyamory, like all life, is a fine balance of freedom and control. A symphony carefully conducted by hearts open to endless love. It's been a beautiful, imperfectly perfect journey, and I am grateful for it.
